1 firefighter killed, over 15 others injured in blaze in Mumbai

A firefighter was killed and more than 15 others were injured while dousing the major blaze which broke out in a commercial building at Link Road in the western suburb of Andheri here today.
The firefighter, Nitin Yevalekar, succumbed to injuries while being treated in the civic-run Cooper Hospital here.
All the injured have also been admitted at the same hospital.
However, there were no reports of any civilian casualties yet, said sources in disaster management cell of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.
The BMC authority have announced compensation of Rs 15 lakh to the next kin of Yevalekar.
The fire was brought under control this evening, sources added.
The fire broke out at 1010 hrs this morning in 22-storey ‘Lotus Business Park’ building, which has offices of film personalities like Hrritik Roshan, Ajay Devgan along with of noted Chef Sanjiv  Kapoor.
The blaze started on the 21st floor spread upto 17th floor. The fire initially broke out in a restaurant on the said floor reason of which could not be ascertained immediately, the sources in Fire Brigade said.
Twenty-two fire engines and 10 water tankers rushed to spot to extinguish the blaze and all surrounding buildings had been evacuated and electric supply of these buildings had also been cut as a precautionary measure. Even the Navy and Coast Guard helicopters had to be deployed to rescue several persons, including 33 firemen, trapped in the major fire that engulfed the high-rise.
The extensive damage to property had been reported due to fire, sources added.
