A day after all the 13 shutters of surplus weirs were lowered in the Mullaiperiyar dam to increase the storage level from 136 ft to 142 ft, AIADMK Supremo and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today said Tamil Nadu’s rights have been upheld in the dam row. It’s a victory for Tamil Nadu and the people of the State. More than the victory, it’s justice that had been rendered to the people of Tamil Nadu, Ms Jayalalithaa said, while making a statement under Rule 110 in the State Assembly. Due to the effective steps taken by her government, the strong arguments put forth by the state before the expert committee and the genuine verdict delivered in favour of Tamil Nadu by the Supreme Court, the Supervisory Committee yesterday decided to lower all the 13 shutters to raise the storage level in the dam from the present 136 ft to 142 ft, she said. It’s (lowering the shutters to raise the water level to 142 ft) a victory for Tamil Nadu. It’s a massive victory especially for the farmers, she added. She said she was in cloud nine as the State had gained this historic victory after 37 years. This has uphold the rights of the people of Tamil Nadu, she added.
Recalling the concerted and concrete steps taken by her government over the years on the issue, Ms Jayalalithaa said the five-member Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court had on May 7 decreed the Tamil Nadu’s writ plea and declared as ultra vires and unconstitutional the Kerala Irrigation and Water Conservation (Amendment) Act, 2006, and allowed Tamil Nadu to raise the water level to 142 feet. Following the Apex Court’s orders to constitute a three-member Supervisory Committee, Ms Jayalalithaa petitioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the panel was formed on July one. The first meeting of the Committee was held on July eight at Thiruvananthapuram in which Tamil Nadu insisted that immediate steps should be taken to raise the storage level fto 142 ft. The second meeting of the Committee which was held at Thekkady yesterday decided to increase the storage level to 142 ft and lowered all the shutters, she added.
Having a dig at her arch-rival and DMK President M Karunanidhi on the issue, Ms Jayalalithaa said prior to the first meeting of the Committee, the DMK Chief had said Kerala had sought a stay on the meeting of the Committee. Reacting to this, Ms Jayalalithaa said she had stated that no petition seeking a stay on the meeting was filed by Kerala and that Mr Karunanidhi was trying to instigate Kerala to do and said only because of the presence of an efficient government deaded by her, Tamil Nadu got a favourable verdict in the Mullaiperiyar Dam issue, the Supervisory Committee was formed, its meeting convened and soon the storage level in the dam would be raised from 136 to 142 ft as per the Supreme court order. As stated by me, yesterday’s lowering of all the shutters to raise the storage level to 142 ft was victory for Tamil Nadu and to the people of the State. More than victory, it’s justice that has been rendered to Tamil Nadu, she added.
