President Pranab Mukherjee today called for improving quality of higher educational institutions in the country. Talking at the maiden convocation ceremony of the Central University of Kerala (CUK) at Periya near here he said attempts should be made to improve standards of top educational institutions, including the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs). Apparently referring to suffering of people due to spraying of dreaded pesticide endosulfan in the district, the President said he hoped that the CUK would be able to find initial solution to the issue. Hailing the Varsity for launching six courses in different disciplines, he said this was a major step achieved by it despite facing many shortages, including buildings. He said he was aware of the education system and method of teachings in the country as he himself was a teacher prior to joining the public life. Chancellor V L Chopra said steps would be taken to ensure development of Central Universities in the country in a phased manner. Talking to a news channel he said the CUK, set up in 2009 had registered major achievements in the field. About 567 students who were completed different courses from 2009 to June2014,were presented certificates at the function. The President, who arrived at a special flight at Mangalore airport, reached Periya by road. Large number of people lined up on both sides of the road to have a glimpse of the first citizen of the country. Governor Shiela Dixit and Chief Minister Oommen Chanday received him at Periya. The Prez later left for Mangalore en-route to Thiruvanthapuram, where he was scheduled to attend official functions.
