In a major breakthrough to the Odisha police in the anti naxal operation in the state,top Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda was arrested by the police from Berhampur town in Southern Odisha late last night. Top police official said Mr.Panda was arrested late last night from a house where he had gone on some specific purposes.The police refused to give details of his arrest.
State Director General of Police Sanjeev Marik who has assumed the charge recently from the outgoing DGP Prakash Mishra has rushed to Berhampur this morning and likely to address the media there about the arrest of Mr. Panda.
Mr.Panda dissociated himself from the Maoist cadres belonging to Andhra Pradesh and Chhatisgarh and confined to the Maoist activities in the selected pockets of Kandhmal, Gajapati and Rayagada district for last several years.
He was also in the target of the Andhra Pradesh- Odisha Zonal border Maoist group after his rift with the Andhra Pradeshg and Chhatisgarh based top Maoist leaders and floated Odisha Maoist organisation with a limited strength of Maoists to continue his operation.
Over the years his organisation lost the strength as several of his cadres were either surrendered or killed in police encounter.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik congratulated the police personnel participated in the arrest of to Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda from Berhampur late last night and announced that the state government will award the police personnel for this spectacular achievement. Making a statement in the Assembly in this regard, Mr Patnaik said Sabyasachi Panda was active in the ‘Maoist Movement’ in the State for more than two decades.
He was operating in Southern Odisha including the districts of Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal and Nayagarh and was involved in numerous sensational cases like the Nayagarh and R Udayagiri armoury loot, killing of Swami Laxmananand Saraswati, abduction of two Italian nationals and blowing up of ambulance in Kandhamal besides overall involvement in killing of 25 security personnel and 34 civilians. Sabyasachi Panda involved in as many as 61 cases including the sensational murder of senior VHP leader Swami Laxmananda Saraswati, was arrested from a house in Badabazar in Berhampur town late last night on the basis of an intelligence input, Odisha Director General of Police Sanjeev Marik said today. Talking to newsmen here, Mr Marik said the operation to nab the most wanted Maoist leader was conducted at about 0100 hours last night. The police team, he said basing on the intelligence input raided three houses and finally found the Maoist leader alone in the fourth house. The DGP said there was no exchange of fire and the police recovered nearly half a kg of gold, Rs 2 lakh cash,one revolver, one laptop,ten mobiles and five pen drive form the possession of Sabyasachi Panda. Mr Marik described the arrest of Mr Panda as a big success for the Odisha police engaged in the anti naxal operation in the state. His arrest will help the police to get the details of the Maoist movement in the state and also put pressure on several other Maoist leaders in the state to surrender. The DGP said the Maoist leader is being interrogated by the senior police officials about various Maoist related violence led by him in the state in the past two decades.
