Several protest were held in the state capital here today over the rising crimes against women and the recent gruesome murder of a woman and failure of the state police to crack the crime. Police had to resort to mild lathicharge on the activusts of Aam Admi Party (AAP) near the GPO when they went violent while taking out a candle march in protest against the killing. Some of the AAP activists were also detained. Earlier in the day, Uttar Pradesh Mahila Congress staged a demonstration at the GPO park here to protest against incidences of alleged crimes against women in the state, including brutal rape and murder of a woman in Mohanlalganj area. The demonstration was led by president of All India Mahila Congress Shobha Ojha, former UPCC president and MLA Reeta Bahuguna Joshi and incharge of the state unit, Ansuiya Sharma, a party spokesman said. Later a 16member delegation led by Sharma met the UP Governor and submitted a memorandum, demanding effective action on his level to check such incidents. In its memorandum, the women wing of the party pointed towards alleged incidents of rape and murder, including the one in Mohanlalganj.
