Union Health minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan today said that preparation are on to formulate a new national health policy. Talking to newsmen here after concluding his two day visit toOdisha , Dr. Harsh Vardhan said a meeting of the state Health Ministers, Health Secretries and all the stake holders would be held at Delhi after the Parliament session was over to discuss the health plan and arrived at a consensus on the policy. The last national health policy was made in 2002. The proposed new Health Policy would focus among other things on the doctorpatient ratio and motivate the doctors to prescribe generic medicines. Replying to a question, the Union Minister said the migration of doctors to foreign countries for more lucrative careers when there is a acute shortage of doctors,is a serious issue for the country. He however,said no Act could be made to check such migration in the present age of liberalisation where the world is functioning as a family. The Union Minister said on the other hand the doctors would be motivated to serve the poor people of the country.The tax payers,Dr Vardhan said pay Rs 8 to 10 crore to develop one doctor in AIIMS. He said a countrywide healthy discussion should be made among the medical, legal professionals and policy makers to arrive at a consensus on the euthanasia. It is a sensitive issue and no decision should be taken in a hurry, he remarked. Dr Vardhan said the Union government has planned to make the National Health Mission more inclusive. He said he has planned to involve citizens,NGOs, religious groups and seek local level solutions and make ‘health for all’ a social movement.
