Salgaocar FC have roped in Zakeer Mundampara, the 24-year-old creative central midfielder known for his speed, vision, ball distribution and shooting prowess. The lad from Mallapuram in Kerala, caught everyone’s attention in 2009 where he captained and was the backbone of the Viva Kerala side. Prior to that, he played for State Bank of Travancore where he began his professional career in 2007. He last played for Mohun Bagan during the 2013-14 season.
Zakeer followed the stint at Viva Kerala with two largely successful years at Churchill Brothers SC where he was part of the Durand Cup winning squad in 2011.
In the same year he was voted the Best Footballer of Kerala by the Kerala Football Association and the icing on the cake came in the form of a call up to the U-23 Indian team for the Pre-Olympic Tournament which was held at Qatar. He played his first match in the tournament against the hosts coming on as a 2nd half substitute. He has since spent a couple of years with Kolkata based clubs, United SC and Mohun Bagan. He will re-unite with former team mate at Viva Kerala, Karma Tsewang, who he attributes for helping him make the move, despite having offers elsewhere.
‘Salgaocar are a great club with a very rich history and I consider it an honour to don the green and white jersey. I look forward to playing under coach Derrick Pereira,’ the player commented. On being asked his immediate targets at his new club, the player remarked, ‘I hope to make a mark and earn a regular place in the starting 11.’
With a midfield comprising of several highly accomplished and experienced players, Zakeer clearly has his task cut out.
