Salgaocar FC has roped in talented and versatile 27-year-old Thangjam Saran Singh to play for them.
The Manipuri, last played for the Churchill Brothers during the 2013-14 season, a club he has spent a majority of his playing career at, barring one year, when he donned the colours of now defunct JCT, Phagwara.
Saran Singh, fondly referred to as ‘Soldier’, not so much for his background as for his incredible work ethic is comfortable playing in several positions as demonstrated over the past few years, thereby offering a coach several options.
He ought to be one of the most underrated Indian players, going about his business quietly and ever so efficiently.
‘I prefer to allow my performances on the pitch do the talking,’ he quipped.
The shy lad can boast of an impressive trophy cabinet having won the I-League twice, the IFA Shield once and 3 Durand Cups in addition to having played a stellar role in guiding the Red Machines to their maiden Federation Cup victory during the last edition.
With the inclusion of Saran, the Greens are an almost complete unit, sans the 3 foreigners.
With the Federation Cup not due to commence until the end of December, the club is looking to sign it’s Marquee player for now and may well look to fill the remaining 2 slots closer to the start of the tournament.
The Goa Pro League and Durand Cup to be played over the next couple of months should offer coach Derrick Pereira ample opportunity to test various combinations.
‘This year we have a lot of depth in our squad and this gives me confidence. There are a lot of extremely talented players and I foresee plenty of healthy competition for starting places through the course of the season, which can only be considered a positive for any club,’ Pereira said.
