‘Vidyadhanam’, an educational scheme aimed at inculcating the habit of thrift in students, initiated by former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Prof K V Thomas, MP, will be inaugurated by Kerala Governor Shiela Dikshit here on August eight.
Informing this at a news conference here he said this was his fifth project initiated in his Ernakulam Lok Saba constituency, where was re-elected to the Lok Sabha, for the benefit of student and the object of his new project was to develop a saving habit among children and also to make available loans for educational purpose.
Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy would preside the function, in which Kerala Excise Minister K Babu give away the certificates to the students, he said. ‘Though this scheme, we will encourage students by opening a savings bank account in their name with an initial deposit of Rs 2500,’ he said adding that in the first phase the scheme would reach 1000 students from carious schools in the Ernakulam constituency, who scored A+ for all subjects in the SSLC and Plus two examinations.
State Bank of India would be the official banker of the project, he said and claimed this ws first of such a kind of project introduced in the country. Stating that the project was being implemented with the cooperation of various public and private sector institutes, he said the project was executed with an object to get the benefit to 5000 students within five years.
Vidyajyothi, vijnanaveedhi, vidyaposhanam pooshakasamrdaham and d-space digital library were the other initiatives by Prof K V Thomas for the benefit of students.
