The Bakhshi Cup-2014, four-day sports meet for trainees of three premier officer training academies of the Army and the Navy, will be held at Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala from tomorrow to September 20.
It is the first time INA is hosting this prestigious tournament at Ezhimala here and trainees from Indian Naval Academy (INA) National Defence Academy (NDA) and Indian Military Academy (IMA) will compete it with the aim of promoting the spirit of sportsmanshaip, espirit-de-corps and healthy competition between the institutes and three Commandants.
It will also be a ‘retreat’ to discuss issues of mutual interest. The genesis of this sports meet dates back to early 1960s, when then Commandant, National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakvasla, Major General Ranbir Bakhshi instituted the sports meet to be contested between NDA and Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun. Over time, many changes were brought in, adding/deleting disciplines and teams, and in 2013, INA was included as the third participant.
The event will be contested in football, basketball, squash and cross- country running. Football and basketball will be conducted on league-cum-knockout basis. The overall winner and the recipient of the coveted ‘Bakhshi Cup ‘ will be decided by the overall performance of the three teams in all four disciplines.
The cadets at INA will also be having their Mid-Term break during this period and many of the senior term cadets will be visiting various Indian Naval ships and establishments based on western and eastern seaboards of India as part of their training curriculum. It will also be a special time for the first term cadets, who joined INA in the current term in June 2, a INA release said.
