In a brave and courageous act, a Naval sailor, who rescued a woman forgetting the danger to his own life, was feared drowned in Kochi today.
The sailor, Vishnu Unni, of INS Sharda, who was passing by, found the woman along with her six-month-old baby falling into the water and allegedly jumped into the Ernakulam Channel from the Vikrant Venduruthy Bridge and without even thinking for a moment, he immediately jumped behind them with total disregard to personal safety as well as the strong currents due to ebbing in the channel.
Though he was able to successfully put both of them into a boat from Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) which had reached the spot by then, he could not board.
The sailor, however, could not be recovered and is missing. Search and rescue operations by Naval team and Fast Interceptor crafts are in progress, a press release said today.
The missing sailor, aged 24 years and a native of Palakkad, in Kerala is unmarried and undergoing training at INS Dronacharya.
The woman and child were taken to Medical Trust hospital where the child was declared to be dead on arrival.
