Legendary singer K J Yesudas has come under severe criticism from women activists over his remarks that women should not wear jeans.
They took out protest marches in the city over the singer’s remark at a public meeting yesterday that wearing jeans was ‘against Indian culture.’
It also triggered a raging debate on social media with many demanding the withdrawal of the statement.
He made the controversial statement while inaugurating cleanliness drive under Swachh Bharat Campaign at Swathi Tirunal Music College here.
Yesudas, a recipient of the Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan, said when women put on jeans, men were tempted to look beyond that (jeans). What should be covered must be covered. We appreciate what’s concealed and that’s our culture. Women should not trouble others by wearing jeans.
Mahila Congress state president Bindu krishna said the singer should withdraw his anti-woman statements.
Several other political and cultural groups have also demanded withdrawl of the controversial statement.
