Life term for Nine in Moral policing and murder case

A special court in Kozhikode today sentenced nine convicts to life imprisonment in the Shahid Bava murder case at Kodiyathur in Kozhikode district of Kerala more than two-and-a-half years ago.
Special Additional District Sessions Judge S Krishna Kumar awarded life term to Kollalathil Abdurehman alias Cheriyappu (55), Naranchilakath Abdul Kareem (45), auto driver Nadakkal Kottakkuzhil Abdul Nazar (31), Maliyekkal Fayaz (28), Kalathingal Najid (22), Puthankadavu Rashid (22, Ellangal Hijas Rehman (24), Naranjilakath Mohammed Jamsheer (25) and Kolayil Shahid Hameed.
The court, which convicted them after finding them guilty of killing Bava in November, 2011 yesterday, also slapped a fine varying from Rs 25,000 and Rs 50,000 on theĀ  convicts.
The judge while authoring the verdict directed to pay Rs two lakh to the father of the deceased. Five people out of the 14 accused were acquitted as the prosecution had failed to prove charges against them. One accused in the case was absconding.
According to the prosecution a group of youth, acting as ‘moral police’ beat up Bava (27), who went to meet a woman at Kodiyathur on the night of November 9, 2011 for apparently having an affair with her.
Bava, who sustained grievous injuries in the attack, succumbed in a hospital on November 13.
