The Calicut University (CU) Registrar and some employees were held hostage for more than 14 hours by a group of pro-CPI (M) Students Federation of India (SFI) activists since last evening.
Police said the CU Registrar T A Abdul Majeed and staff members were held hostage since last evening by the agitating students who laid a siege before the administrative block. However, the Registrar and others were released by the police this morning.
The students, protesting against alleged irregularities in allocation of hostel accommodation, were continuing their agitation, sources said.
Meanwhile, reports said Vice Chancellor M Abdul Salaam today issued orders to close education departments and hostels in the wake of continued students unrest in the varsity at Thenjippalam near Malappuram.
