Country’s first Pechora Missile Park inaugurated

A Pechora Missile Park was inaugurated at Sainik School, in Thiruvananthapuram today. With this the School has become the only School in the country to have this system along with the launcher in the campus.
Pechora system is a Surface to air antiaircraft short range missile system designed for destruction of enemy aircraft, missiles and other low and medium range targets, a defence press release said.
Pechora has an effective range of 32 Kms. It is a Russian made Missile System. This system is installed at the school main gate with the help of 17FBSU, Southern Air Command, 7BRD Delhi and PWD Kerala.
Air Marshal A P Garud VM, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Air Command and Chairman Local Board of Administration inaugurated the Pechora Missile Park at Sainik School. Speaking on the occasion, he said the Air Marshal, who is an alumnus of Sainik School, Satara, Maharashtra, called upon the youth to take up a challenging career in the Armed Forces to serve the nation with pride.
He also inaugurated an NDA awareness and motivation programme in the school. On his arrival at the school, a smart Guard of Honour was presented to him by the school NCC contingent.
Later he laid a wreath at the ‘Stupa of Remembrance’ and paid floral tributes at the bust of V K Krishna Menon, the founder of Sainik Schools in India.¬† The Principal¬† Capt (IN) G Rambabu briefed the Air Marshal about the ongoing projects and the achievements of cadets in scholastic and non scholastic areas.
The Air Marshal AP Garud  went around the campus and expressed satisfaction at the excellent infrastructural facilities available at the school. He donated a cheque for One lakh rupees for the development and offered 10 computers to the school.
The Principal welcomed the gathering and introduced the Chief Guest to the audience. The Registrar Lt Col PG Suresh Kumar proposed the vote of thanks. An impressive gathering of staff, cadets and parents attended the function.
