At a time when scores of ruling AIADMK were observing fasts and performing special poojas in temples seeking early release of party supremo J Jayalalithaa from the Bangalore prison, the tea shop owners in Cuddalore, about 150 km from here, announced supply of free tea to the public for one day.
Joining the agitation bandwagon, the Cuddalore Tea Shop Owners Association observed a day long fast, in which a majority of the tea shop owners in Cuddalore participated. The fast was led by Association President Venugopal, who announced that the day Jayalalithaa was released by the Court, free tea would be served to the public.
This unique offer by the tea owners is quite interesting considering that Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, successor to Jayalalithaa who was disqualified as an MLA following her conviction in the Disproportionate Assets Case, has started his career as a tea shop owner in Theni district.
The tea shop business is still alive and was being run by his relatives.
