Kerala Congress Chairman P C Thomas today demanded that state government form a Rubber Trading Corporation (RTC) immediately to save rubber farmers. Talking to newsmen in Kannur, Mr Thomas said RTC should have equity shares of the Central and State Governments and the State Rubber Board.
The RTC would have power to control the sale, import, supply, cost fixation and procurement while considering the domestic production of the rubber in the state. The State Government would pressurise the Centre for forming RTC.
He said the government should also amend Rubber Act 1947 for forming the RTC. He said the price of rubber had come to Rs 100 per kg from Rs 258 per kg and the State and Central Governments had not done anything yet. He said around 12.5 lakh small scale rubber farmers were dependent on rubber crops only and out of them 95 per cent were from Kerala.
The government should fix at least a fare value of Rs 200 per kg to save the farmers. If the state government had no money to procure it, it should inform to the central government, Mr Thomas added.
