Though legal marital age for women has been fixed at 18, it would not be advisable to arrange marriage on attaining it immediately, Kerala Panchayat and Social Welfare Minister M K Muneer today said.
Speaking at a function to distribute certificate under ‘Nai Roshni’ programme in Kozhikode jointly launched by the Central Minorities’ Ministry and Oisca International, he said it had been noticed that certain parents were in a hurry to arrange marriage soon after attaining 18 years of age.
Underlining the need for allowing them to continue education till 21 years of age, he said mothers would be able to protect their interest on the issue. He also called for launching an awareness campaign on discontinuance of education of girl children.
Stating drinking habit of men in the state has declined since the empowerment self help group Kudumbasree, he said the women with their income were self reliant to run the family even without the contribution from the former.
Oisca International Secretary General M Aravind Babu presided over the function. State Minorities’ Commission Chairman Adv. M Veerankutty and P Chandrasekharan spoke.
