A meeting of Vice chancellors, convened by Kerala Governor P Sathasivam, today decided to set up a Chancellors council for discussing issues in higher education sector and problems common to the universities.
The council will consist of the state education minister P K Abdu Rabb, who is Pro vice chancllor, Vice chairman of the higher education council, all Vice chancellors of universities headed by the chancellor, Higher Education Secretary and Secretary to Governor. Briefing reporters after the meeting,
Sathasivam, the former Chief Justice of India, who is also the chancellor of all varsities in Kerala, said the council can be convened as frequently as necessary to seve as an ‘effective forum’ for exchange of ideas and to afford a coordination merchanism for resoultion of issues. The vice chancellors have to submit report to him within three months.
It was also decided that publication of accademic timetable with a definite schedule for admission, examination and release of results from the 201516 academic year. ‘This should be strictly adhered to and any deviation or departure from the published time frame will be closely monitored and necessary internvention shall be made by the chancellor’, he said.
There will be a chancellor’s award for best performing university. Vice chancellors have to make quarterly reviews about the conduct of examination, publication of results etc, he said. Vice chancellors of 12 universities participated in the meeting held at the Cochin University of Science and Technology at nearby Kalamassery, while vice chancellor of Malayalam university abstained.
Education minister P K Abdu Rabb, Additional chief secretary (Higher Education) Dr K M Abraham, also took part in the meeting. Activists of Students Federation of India, Muslim Students Federation, AISF and ABVP took out marches to the meeting venue listing out various issues in the varsities and were stopped by police.
