New Delhi | President Pranab Mukherjee today paid rich tributes to Justice V R Krishna Iyer describing him as a judicial statesman and said the eminent jurist will remain an inspiration for the members of legal fraternity.
Mukherjee said Iyer used law as an instrument of social engineering and social change making justice accessible to all including the marginalized and the vulnerable.
The President said the demise of Justice Iyer leaves a void which is difficult to fill. In his death, the nation has lost a great judicial statesman whose long years in public service will be remebered for years to come.
Sonia, Rahul pay tributes to Justice Iyer
New Delhi | Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Vice President Rahul Gandhi today condoled the passing away of Justice V R Krishna Iyer, describing him as a true liberal and paying tribute to his deep commitment to the cause of social justice. Describing Justice Iyer as the most impressive model for jurists in India, the Congress President said Iyer was a true liberal and an intellectual giant.
He will be remembered for his reformative and progressive judgments. Some of the judgments he delivered have shaped the way India functions today. He was a man of many interests and contributed heavily to legal literature and social welfare. Noting that human rights were at the centre of the professional and social life of Justice Iyer, she said today in his death India has lost a champion of the disadvantaged citizens.
Justice Iyers struggle for justice will inspire generations to come. Gandhi extended her sympathies to members of his family. In his condolence message, Rahul Gandhi said he was extremely saddened at the passing away of Justice Iyer. His judgements exemplified his deep commitment to the cause of social justice and creating a fair and equal society.
His loss will be deeply mourned by all those whose lives were touched by his work. My heartfelt condolences to his family on his demise, the Congress Vice President said.
BJP condoles death of VR Krishna Iyer
New Delhi | BJP and RSS today condoled the demise of former Supreme Court judge VR Krishna Iyer, describing him as a nationalist and path-breaking judge who took pro-people decisions. BJP president Amit Shah said he was deeply saddened over his death and on behalf of his party expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the peace of his soul.
He was a nationalist and was known for his straight-forward views. His is an irreparable loss to the nation, Shah said. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh expressed deep condolences on the demise of the eminent jurist. Iyer was one among them who appreciated RSS, its ideology and activities, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said. RSS Sahasarakaryavah Dattatreya Hosabale expressed his condolences saying,Great Soul, May the soul rest in peace.
Iyer passed away today at the age of 100 in a private hospital in Kochi, Kerala. He was suffering from some kidney related problems and was admitted in the hospital on November 24. Expressing his condolences, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu also said he had personally known Justice Iyer.
He was not only a very great jurist, but a great humanist too. He was the pride of Indian judiciary and was active till his last breath, he said while describing him as a path-breaking judge who took pro-people decisions in every walk of life. He expressed his views in a free and frank manner and emerged as a role model and also a conscious keeper for all in the judiciary, he said.
