Kolkata | Deputy Speaker of West Bengal Assembly Sonali Guha today courted controversy by allegedly threatening to evict a resident of an apartment at Golabari in Howrah district. Guha, a Trinamool Congress leader, has denied the charge. The resident of the apartment alleged that Guha, who arrived on the scene in the wee hours last night, threatened to evict him from his flat and lock it up.
He also alleged that he was physically assaulted by Trinamool supporters who accompanied the deputy speaker while policemen remained mute spectators. In the footage shown in local television channels Guha was heard saying, Jyada fat fat nehi karna (Don’t talk much). This is my last warning. I am the man of chief minister, I am the government. Don’t forget it.
He further complained that the deputy speaker came there on behalf of a TMC activist who is also a resident of the apartment, and wanted to know why the lift of the building was stopped. Guha in her defence claimed that she had threatened nobody in the apartment and that she went there on a humanitarian ground because there was a pregnant woman who was in trouble.
I never said that I will lock his flat, she said. Describing the man as a BJP activist, Guha counter charged that he had been troubling residents of the apartment for a long time. A senior police officer in Howrah said that the police received complaints from both the parties and would look into the matter and then take action.
Refuting the charge that the police had remained a bystander, he said that two residents of the apartment got involved in a brawl over non-functioning of the lift. The police separated them. An investigation was on, he said.
