Puducherry | Police arrested two men on Sunday on charges of raping a 40-year-old woman after her attempt to commit suicide by drowning in the sea failed and was washed ashore unconscious along the Puducherry coast.
The arrested were identified as S Raja, 35 and his relative K Vijaykumar, 32, crab catchers from Pillaichavadi, Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu. Senior superintendent of police V J Chandran said the two confessed to raping the woman.
The victim and her sisters, who were evicted by police from Sri Aurobindo Ashram following a Supreme Court order, and their parents tried to commit suicide by drowning in the sea on December 18.
Two of the sisters and their mother had drowned while the victim, her two other sisters and their father Gadadhar were washed ashore unconscious at different locations.
The victim was washed ashore a couple of kilometres from where she attempted suicide along with others.
In her complaint, she said that two unidentified men raped her when she was lying unconscious on the shore. Kalapet police had registered a case under Section 376 (2) (g) (gang rape) and began investigations.
Police secured security camera recordings of a few hotels and guesthouses in the locality. They spotted two men moving under suspicious circumstances on the day of the crime in the locality.
Police, with the help of locals, identified them as Raja and Vijayakumar.
