Kochi | Mahindra Two Wheelers Ltd today launched its global scooter ‘Gusto’ in the Kerala market, aiming to woo the fairer sex and youth.
The Gusto, which has been developed indigenously at its R&D facility in Pune, is India’s first scooter with a unique patented height adjustable seat, making it easy, especially for women to ride comfortably, Sarosh Shetty, Vice President Marketing, told reporters here.
The seat can be adjusted to 3.5 cms.
On their target customers, he claimed ‘Gusto’ was India’s first unisex scooter and youth and women would be targetted.
Asked if Mahindra was expecting a surge in demand with many car manufactures jacking up prices, Shetty said we are hopeful that there will be significant demand. There is lot of demand from dealers. Signs are good, he said.
On export plans, he said though there was demand from South Asia and South America, the company will look at India. Kerala and Karnataka are a huge southern market, he said.
The vehicle’s bold distinctive styling has its origins in Italy, he said.
It is also the first global platform scooter in India.
The scooter which has been already been launched in North and West India, has been well received, he said.
In Kerala, 30,000 units are sold a month and we expect 40-50 per cent business to come from south, he said.
Scooters account for 25 per cent of the two-wheeler market in the country, while in Kerala it was close to 50 per cent.
The scooter industry was resilient and was growing at over 20 per cent across the country, while motorcycles were seeing a growth rate of only 5-10 per cent, he said.
