Varanasi | Seven persons, including three policemen, were arrested here for allegedly robbing a bullion trader of gold ornaments worth Rs one crore, police said today. On a tip-off, the crime branch and local police team yesterday arrested three constables identified as Narsingh Pratap Singh and Girjesh Kumar Singh, both posted in Varanasi and another Ritesh Kumar Srivastava posted in Lucknow police lines, DIG (Varanasi Range), S K Bhagat said at a press conference.
They were arrested for their involvement in robbing 4 kgs of gold ornaments worth Rs 1 crore in Beniabagh area here last month from a bullion trader Vikas alias Baga Ram Mali, a native of Rajasthan, he said. Along with the trio, four other persons identified as Sudhir Srivastava, Tolaram, Nitesh Srivastava and Ganesh Kumar Bharti were also arrested yesterday from Piyari crossing when all the seven wereon their way to sell the looted ornaments in the market, the DIG said.
Police have recovered 2.6 kgs of 8 gold biscuits worth Rs 75 lakhs which have been melted out of the looted 4 kgs of ornaments, 31 gold necklaces worth Rs 13 lakhs among other items worth Rs 7 lakhs, one antique idol, an electric furnace for melting ornaments. A car and a motorcycle have also been seized. On December 26, the robbers had intercepted the bullion trader near a Beniabagh crossing in the busy market in Chowk police station area limits, he said.
They had followed him immediately after he had deboarded the Mahanagri Express train on the same day. He was travelling from Mumbai to Varanasi with the consignment. The accused then took away Vikas in their car to the outskirts of the city and robbed him of the gold ornaments, police said.
