Kozhikode | A spirited Goa and Maharashtra entered semifinals of the football tournament inf the ongoing 35th National Games beating Kerala and Tamil Nadu 2-0, 2-1 respectively in the last preliminary rounds here today. Starting the campaign in an attacking game at the Kozhikode Corporation E M S Stadium, Girish Naik shook the host’s box by catching on corner kick by Mario Mario Mascarenhas in the 24th minute.
Marcus Mascarenhas earned the second goal for the visitors from the penalty area in the injury time making the final score to 2-0 thus sealing the semifinals hopes of the home said.
Kerala attempted for an equalizer throughout the encounter but could not hoodwink the alert and overcharged Goans despite having the huge home ground support. The host’s Anish K P was shown red card for fouling Mackroy Peikoto. In first encounter at Olympian Abdurehman stadium in the morning, Keralite Mijo Joseph scored sole goal for Tamil Nadu in the second minute of the encounter.
Utilising a corner kick Mohammed Irshad, also a Keralite earned the equaliser for Maharashtra in the 23rd minute making the score 1-1. Irshad struck again through header taking a corner ball for the side taking the final tally 2-1. With this Maharashtra, and Goa which accumulated six points each in two wins and having better goal percentage qualified for the semifinals.
