Thiruvananthapuram | Funds worth crores of rupees meant for the development of sports infrastructure in Kerala for the 35th National Games have been diverted by the previous Marxist-led Government, Games Chief Commissioner and Principal Coordinator Jacob Punnoose today alleged.
A sum of Rs five crore had been diverted to a stadium in Alappuzha named after Marxist ideologue E M S Namboodiripad which was not even remotely connected to the National Games, he told newspersons here.
He said funds worth crores of rupees were utilised for the Attingal Indoor Stadium. Similarly, funds were diverted for the Thankamma Stadium at Peroorkada, located in the constituency of Former Sports Minister M Vijayakumar.
Referring to the allegations of corruption levelled by the Marxist-led Opposition in the conduct of the game, Mr Punnoose said he was prepared to face any inquiry.
It may be noted that Sports Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan had already sought a detailed inquiry into the National Games Fund ‘misuse’ since 2007. The Ministry was examining such fund diversions and irregularities.
