Activists form outfit to secure release of Indians jailed abroad

Kozhikode | ‘Right of Return,’ an organization to fight for the cause of Indians Languishing in jails in different countries has been formed by a group of activists here.
Talking to reporters here activists Maina Umaibhan, Mahesh Vijayan, Moidu Vanimel and Jayachandran Mokeri said the group in association with other rights’ activists would work for return of many Indians jailed abroad.
The attempts would be a continuing efforts by the group which jointly secured release of Jayachandran Mokeri from Male recently and efforts to get release of Rubina also from Maldives jail.
They said as many as 5986 Indians are behind bars in different foreign countries according to information provided by Minister of State for External Affairs Gen V K Singh in the Rajya Sabha in July 2014. They said 71 persons, who have completed prison terms, are still languishing in different jails as they were unable to return home due to procedural wrangles. Prisons in Saudi Arabia alone accounted for 1400 Indians, they said.
Stating ‘Right of Return’ will extend similar activities in five others states apart from Kerala, they said it would collect maximum information of Indian prisoners abroad through RTI Act, Pravasi organizations and social media and idenfity deserving cases after thorough scrutiny, they added.
