Chennai | Tamil Nadu Governor Dr K Rosaiah hailing AIADMK Supremo and former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in protecting the interests of the state on a host of issues, including the inter-state river disputes, today drew flak from the Opposition parties in the State.
The Opposition parties, including the DMK and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) questioned the propriety of the Governor, hailing Ms Jayalalithaa, who was convicted and sentenced to four year’s imprisonment by a Special Court in Karnataka in connection with the disproportionate assets case, that cost her the Chief Ministership post.
Taking objections to the Governor lauding Ms Jayalalithaa’s initiatives in protecting the state’s rights on inter-state river disputes like the Cauvery row with Karnataka and the Mullaiperiyar dam issue with Kerala, DMK President M Karunanidhi wondered, how could a person, holding a gubernatorial post, shower encomiums on a person who was convicted and imposed a fine of Rs 100 crores in the disproportionate wealth case.
Neutral observers should ponder over whether it was proper on the part of the Governor, who is holding a Constitutional post, to appreciate a convicted person in the State Assembly, he said, in a statement.
PMK Founder Dr S Ramadoss too took exception to the Governor hailing Ms Jayalalithaa in his customary address to the State Assembly. The Assembly norms have been buried, Dr Ramadoss said in a statement, critical of the Governor’s address.
He said it was unacceptable that the Governor, in his address, has portrayed the AIADMK’s victory in the Srirangam Assembly bypoll as the victory for the State Government.
Except for heaping praise on Ms Jayalalithaa, there is nothing concrete in the Governor’s address, he claimed The Governor, while delivering his customary address to the House, appreciated Ms Jaylalilthaa for her relentless pursuit and untiring efforts to secure the legitimate rights of the state in various inter-state river water disputes like the Cauvery and the Mullaiperiyar Dam issues.
Dr Rosaiah said it was only because of her perseverance and courage that the state could secure a historic verdict from the Supreme Court declaring the Mullaiperiyar Dam as hydrologically, structurally and seismically safe, thereby enabling Tamil Nadu to raise the water level to 142 ft from 136 ft.
He also lauded the state government on various fields, including on the law and order front and on the prevailing power situation, thereby incurring the wrath of the opposition. On the whole, the DMK described the Governor’s address as a publicity stunt, that highlighted the past year’s achievements of the ruling AIADMK.
Mr Karunanidhi also said it does not contain any effective schemes for the future. It’s a mere ritual and a diluted address, he added. The BJP termed it as an address that belied the expectations of the people. The principal opposition DMDK and the MDMK also said there was no announcements in the Governor’s address concerning the issues of the people.
