Pune | A senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, M H Sawant (58) Director General of the Maharashtra Council of Agricultural Education and Research, Sawant was arrested last night by the Pune Police on charges of molestating and allegedly raping four school girls in his apartment building.
As per the primary information given by Sinhagad Road Police, the four girls aged between eight and 10- lived in a building near Sawant’s. The incident first came to light yesterday when the girls confided their teacher about the alleged sexual assault by Sawant.
A senior police officer said, as per primary information, the suspect had been sexually assaulting the girls for the past few days. He called them over to his building basement on the pretext of offering them food. The incident came to light when the girls told their school teacher, who further informed the principal.
Shrikant Gagtap, PMC Corporator from the area, said the school principal informed his wife about the incident and we immediately informed the police about it.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Sudhakar Pathare said Sawant has been arrested last night and has been booked under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code for rape and molestation. As of now, we know about only four victims. We are recording the statements of each girl, he added.
He has also been booked under the protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act. Sawant, an officer from the Maharashtra public services, was promoted to the IAS cadre in 1998. He has been posted to various departments of the government of Maharashtra, including sports, social welfare and agriculture.
A delegation of PMC Corporators met Pune Police commissioner Satish Mathur and demanded a thorough investigation in the case. We have requested the commissioner to ensure speedy investigation and prosecution, said corporator Manjusha Deepak Nagpure.
