Kottayam | Depressed over falling prices of natural rubber,a debt-ridden farmer from north Kerala district of Kannur has allegedly committed suicide at Moonnilavu near Pala in Kottayam, police said here today.
Kannur Peravoor Thundiyil Cherumundathu Krishnankutty Nair (59) allegedly hanged himself from a rubber tree in a small plantation owned by a farmer on the outskirts of Moonnilavu. He was found hanging yesterday, police said.
A suicide note said he was forced to take the extreme step as he was unable to repay loans taken from various banks and private money lenders due to the falling prices of rubber.
He also blamed the policies of Finance Minister K M Mani for falling prices of rubber. So he opted for Pala, the FM’s assembly constituency, to commit suicide, it said. The distance between his home town Peravoor and Pala is over 300 km.
To provide relief to rubber farmers who are beleaguered by the recent fall in rubber prices, Mani in his recent budget has announced establishment of the Rubber Price Stabilisation Fund of Rs 300 crore for purchasing 20,000 tonnes at a market support price of Rs 150 per kg.
