Kannur | Noted artiste P S Karunakaran passed away at his residence at Chirakara near Thalassery today morning due to old age illness. He was 78 and survived by wife Gowri and daughter Sreekala. Another son Sreekant had died earlier.
He was born at Thalassery in 1937 and became a traditional painting artiste. He studied the water colour painting from eminent artist C V Balan Nair and later served as the Principal of Thalassery School of Arts.
Kerala Lalithakala Academy honored him during 2013-2014 and also won various Central and State awards and grant.
Karunakaran has created perfect replicas of major landmarks of Thalassery like the Odathil Mosque, Thalassery Fort, pier, Thiruvangad Temple, St. John Anglican Church and the shrine of St. Teresa of Avila at Mahe with his fine choice of colours.
Proficient in water colour painting, his works of fishermen and landscapes are good examples of his artistic brilliance.
The funeral will be held tomorrow at NSS Crematorium, Thalassery, family sources said.
