New Delhi | A 44-year-old businessman was allegedly beaten to death by unidentified persons at Connaught Place’s Shankar Market last night, police said. According to police, Biju Verghese hailed from Kerala and was running a courier agency at the market for two decades.
Police said the incidence took place at around 11:30 P.M. last night when some 3-4 people turned up at the shop and started a heated exchange with Verghese. One of the men then started hitting Verghese on the head with a helmet till he started to bleed and collapsed on the road.
When a couple of Verghese’s staffers tried to come to his aid, the attackers threatened them into backing away. Following the attack, Verghese was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. His family members, who were on a vacation to their hometown of Kottayam in Kerala, were informed by police.
A case of murder has been registered at Barakhamba Road police station and teams have been formed to crack the case, police said, adding that some persons have been detained for questioning in this regard. Although they were yet to ascertain the reason behind the killing, police said that the hand of local criminals is suspected in the case.
