Guwahati | Several passengers were injured when a train derailed and fell into Champavati river in Kokrajhar district of western Assam in the wee hours today.
Railway sources said the Sifung Passenger Express derailed between Salakati and Basugaon railway stations at 0515 hours this morning.
The engine and five coaches derailed and fell into the river, breaking off railings of a bridge over the river. The driver sustained serious injuries, while several passengers were also hurt. Passengers were later shifted from the site.
”The line has been blocked as a result of the accident and other trains may get delayed,” railway sources added.
The cause of the accident is not ascertained yet, but local reports said the engine had hit an uprooted tree that was lying on the railway tracks.
