Thrissur | After his meeting with the farmers across the country, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will interact with the fishing community and rubber growers in Kerala tomorrow.
Mr Gandhi, who is reaching Kozhikode today to address a public meeting organised by the Youth Congress, will reach out to fishermen at Chavakkad beach. He will also meet representatives of rubber growers’ organisations in Aluva in Ernakulam district.
Mr Gandhi is meeting various stakeholders ever since the end of his nearly two-month-long sabbatical and his arrival to the national capital on April 16.
After running a campaign in-and-outside Parliament against the Narendra Modi government on the Land Acquisition Bill issue, he began his ‘Kisan Yatra’ from Vidarbha on April 30 and carried on his interactions with farmers in Telangana.
Mr Gandhi’s Kerala visit is in line with his focus on positioning the Congress in the state, which is going to polls next year.
Congress-led UDF government in Kerala has said the state would not implement the Centre’s directive to impose uniform ban on trawling by all fishing vessels in coastal areas from June 1 to July 31 in the 12 nautical miles off state coast.
The visit of Mr Gandhi is expected to give a stimulus to the sagging image of the Congress and its feeder organisations in the state, especially with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government facing serious allegations of corruption.
Congress leaders hope that Mr Gandhis visit will temporarily halt the ongoing feuds triggered over change in the party leadership.
Mr Gandhi is expected to reach Kozhikode at 1330 hrs and after addressing a youth Congress rally in the evening, he will leave for Thrissur and stay at Ramanilayam guest house tonight. He will travel to Chavakkad beach, some 25 km away tomorrow morning to study the situation relating to the agitation by fishermen community against the Centres decision to extend the trawling period.
On way back to Cochin airport, he will meet the rubber growers at Aluva guest house, before flying to Delhi.
Elaborate security arrangements have been made by the police and Special Protection Group in connection with Mr Gandhis visit.
