Thiruvananthapuram | Flood of Fire written by Amitav Ghosh will be launched jointly by the Penguin Books India and the D C Books in Kochi on June 17.
It is the latest and the last in the Ibis trilogy. Amitav Ghosh will be in conversation with noted cultural critic and author Dr. C S Venkiteswaran.
The ibis trilogy started with Sea of Poppies, River of Smoke and the latest Flood of Fire. The first volume discussed on the inner workings of the Opium trade in the British era in India, while River of Smoke, the second installment, portrayed the backdrop of the rising tensions in dealing with the opium trade between China and the foreign traders who had set their base in Canton. Now in its final volume Flood of Fire, Ghosh takes us through another phase of the trade. Through the rising friction between the traders of the East India Company and the Chinese government which ends up in the First opium war (1839-42).
Amitav Ghosh was born in Kolkata on July 11, 1956 and grew up in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. He is the author of ten highly acclaimed works of fiction and non-fiction which include the Booker Prize shortlisted Sea of Poppies, River of Smoke, The Glass Palace and The Shadow Lines, The Circle of Reason, In an Antique Land, Dancing in Cambodia, The Calcutta Chromosome and The Hungry Tide.
