Thiruvananthapuram | Congress party workers today violated the election code of conduct by distributing sarees to elderly women voters of a panchayat in Aruvikkara Assembly constituency where bypoll will be held on June 27.
Reacting to the incident, CPI (M) leader Pinarayi Vijayan alleged that the Congress was trying to influence the voters fearing party’s failure in the bypoll. The violation of code of conduct occurred when Chief Minister Oommen Chandy led the election campaign in the constituency today, he added.
BJP leader O Rajagopal alleged that the Congress-led UDF Government was acting against a free and fair election in Aruvikkara fearing anti incumbency.
Meanwhile, the election officials visited the spot and stopped the free distribution of sarees to voters.
