Kochi | Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, a leading private hospital here, is all set to launch a first-of its kind comprehensive foetal care programme in the country very shortly.
This unique programme, labeled Amrita Centre of Excellence in Foetal Care, incorporates the services of specialist doctors from nine sub-specialties related to foetal care, so as to provide comprehensive pre and postnatal services which would include, among others, complete foetal ultrasound services including obstetric scans and fetal diagnostic interventions, foetal and pediatric genetics, foetoscopic laser surgeries and even open foetal surgeries, a hospital release said here today.
A dedicated foetal cardiology center under the Department of Pediatric Cardiology for the diagnosis, counseling, planned peri-natal care of cardiac defects along with in-utero therapy and foetal cardiac interventions would also be part of this service. Currently such facilities are only available in select centers in the west, it said.
With the official launch still a few weeks away, doctors at Amrita have already set the ball rolling when they have performed successfully the state’s first ever foetal laser surgery last month, on a set of complicated identical twin foetuses of a Keralite couple living in Dubai.
The foetuses were diagnosed with a complication unique to identical twins at 25 weeks of gestation, which if left untreated would have resulted in the loss of the entire pregnancy, said Dr. Vivek Krishnan, Chief Consultant in Foetal Medicine and Perinatology and Prof. Mohan Abraham, Head of Pediatric and Foetal Surgery at AIMSRC.
Incidentally, the couple was advised by doctors in Dubai, where the complication was first diagnosed, that facilities for such surgeries existed only in Europe and America. It was then the couple decided to consult the Kochi-based hospital and was assured that the same procedure could be done in their hometown.
The couple flew in to Kochi the very next day and the procedure was performed successfully with the help of Prof. S. Suresh, the man credited with Indias first foetal laser surgery, said Dr. Krishnan.
The expectant mother is now into her fourth post-operative week and has had a smooth recovery. The couple are eagerly awaiting delivery, it added.
