New Delhi | Traders’ body CAIT today approached Food Safety and Standard Authority of India protesting against a move to hold responsible retailers as well for selling unapproved products at the level of manufacturing.
In a communication sent to Chief Executive Officer, FSSAI Yudhvir Singh Malik, CAIT said, ” We agree with approach of FSSAI to make available only safe and approved products in the country and for this purpose a strict ban must be imposed on the manufacturers and FSSAI is duly empowered to take appropriate action against such manufacturer. Any action of holding retailers responsible will be constructed as a failure of the administrative mechanism to check the products at the level of its origin.”
It said the move for holding retailers responsible has come about in the backdrop of ban on Maggi noodles by the Centre and some State authorities.
Retailers’ activities are confined to selling only whereas manufacturing a product is the duty of a manufacturer ” Hence onus of availability of approved products in the market is devolved upon the manufacturer only” CAIT added.
