Chennai | Yoga is the best medicine to control diabetes, according to MV Hospital for Diabetes Chief Dr Vijay Viswanathan. Talking to reporters here, he said it does not matter if one did not have a place to jog or the time to go to the gym.
”You can do 30 minutes of yoga at home and this will help control your diabetes”, he added. ”Two studies that we have done over the last few years have given us concrete results– patients who have done yoga have lower blood sugar levels, lower blood pressure, lower bad cholesterol, and in some cases, were even able to go off medication”, he said.
Both groups of patients in his study were given medication, and instructed on nutrition and exercise. But one group did yoga in addition to this, and they had better health outcomes than patients who did not, he said.
Another study in Delhi obtained similar results, Dr Viswanathan said, adding, yoga should now be made part of diabetes treatment. ”Diabetes is an expensive disorder. Patients with complications have six times more hospital expenditure than those without”, he said.
He said Yoga could also help in staying away from complications. ”Our study also showed that those who practised yoga ate less and their insulin resistance dropped, making them healthier”.
Yoga when practised regularly helps in reducing levels of blood glucose, blood pressure and weight and improves quality of life, Dr Vijay Viswanathan said and added that yogasanas could be used as an adjunct with diet and drug in the management of diabetes.
