Thiruvananthapuram | Kerala Forest Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan declared today as ‘Snake, Bird Day’ in the state.
The minister made the announcement at a function organised by the Snake Bird Foundation, in association with the Nature Club of Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ).
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said the Government would extend all the help for the Founfation for the protection of Red Data Birds, coming under the threatened species. A state level cesus of the bird would be initiated soon.
Foundation Chairman said a long pending demand from the Snake Bird Foundation to the Government is fulfilled with the declaration of June 22 as the Snake Bird Day in the State.
He also urged the Government to make Snake Bird the mascot of the Nehru Trophy boat race in Alleppey District as these as these birds ideally nest in the Kuttanad water bodies of Alappuzha.
The Minister said only 1,526 snake birdes were found in Asia, based on a study by the International Water Foul and Wetland Research Bureau in 1993.
Out of 1,526 birds, 1,196 birds were in India, he said, adding, Kerala could only boast of 64 such snake birds, according to Birds of Kerala, a book by a noted ornithologist Induchoodan.
