New Delhi | A new dimension has been added to the Lalit Modi controversy with the former IPL boss tweeting that he met the Gandhi family in a London restaurant, providing a much needed ammunition to the ruling BJP cornered by opposition Congress over the help given to him by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje in getting UK travel and immigration documents.
The Congress, which has been demanding immediate resignation of Ms Swaraj and Ms Raje and maintaining pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to sack them, tried to explain the situation saying that meeting with Ms Priyanka Gandhi and Robert Vadra was not deliberate but a chance as Mr Modi himself has said that he ”just ran into Robert and Priyanka. However, the BJP said the Congress could not get away by saying that the meeting was by chance.
I had run into Robert and Priyanka separately in a restaurant – they were with Timmy Sarna. He has my no. They can call me. Will tell them what I feel about them exactly. Will mince no words. Will make no deal. But tell them witch hunt will now make them realize I was. If I remember correctly it was last year and the year before. Doubt either reported it to anyone. They were in power then (sic), he said in a series of tweets.
BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra asked the Congress to explain the purpose of their meeting with controversial IPL boss. ”The meeting has raised serious questions of propriety, on which the Congress president Sonia Gandhi must answer,” he said.
In the face of the mounting Congress attack, the BJP has been maintaining that its ministers were not tainted and there was no question of their resignation.
The Opposition yesterday made public the documents, which it said, were carrying the original signature of Ms Raje which she had given as an affidavit in support of Lalit Modi’s plea for getting UK immigration.
