Kozhikode | Describing Kerala Revenue Department’s recent order on sand mining from rivers as unscientific, CPI (M) Central Committee member and former state Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem today said people will come out against the arbitrary rule.
In a release here today, he said the order was biased towards a particular area as permission for sand mining from rivers was denied to others disregarding promise made by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash during a meeting with trade union leaders, including himself (Kareem).
He said as per the recent order the government banned sand mining from Kuttiyadi and Kadalundi rivers denigrating interests of people in Feroke, Ramanattukara, Cheruvannur, Peruvayal, Mavoor, Chathamangalam and Kodiyathur Kadavu citing a report by Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) but granted permission to Vazhakkad Panchayant in Malappuram district only.
The pro CPI (M) Centre of Indian Trade Union had staged a fast before the Kozhikode Collectorate seeking sand mining rights for workers and got assurance from the government for the purpose.
The ‘biased’ order was aimed at denigrating interests of thousands of workers, he said people will express their resentment against it.
