Thiruvananthapuram | In a first-of-its-kind initiative, a group of merchants at Ooruttambalam in this district of Kerala have installed CCTV cameras to secure their shops as well the locality from thefts.
Members of the merchants forum Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti (KVVES) contributed a sum of Rs two lakh for the project which was inaugurated by State Director General of Police T P Senkumar last evening.
”It is a unique project,” he said. A two-km radius of the busy junction in the National Highway towards Kanyakumari was covered under the CCTV, thus enabling the police to identify thieves.
The merchants decided to install CCTV cameras after the recent spurt in theft cases in the area.
Eight CCTV cameras were installed at a height of 18ft on poles fixed on roadside at a distance of 200 ft at Ooruttambalam.
The screens for surveillance have been placed at the office of KVVES at Ooruttambalam. Steps were being taken to connect the surveillance mechanism to the police control room.
KVVES sources said the facility would be extended to other areas after evaluating its success here.
