Cops foil bid to smuggle rice to Kerala, 3 held

Tirunelveli | The Civil Supplies Crime Investigation Department (CS-CID) police of Tamil Nadu today foiled a bid to smuggle 2.50 tonnes of rice meant for Public Distribution System (PDS) to Kerala and arrested three persons for illegally ferrying the rice at Nanguneri, today.
Talking to newspersons here, CS-CID Superintendent of Police, P. Swaminathan said, a special team intercepted a truck and a car at Nanguneri Tollgate on suspicion, and during the check, the coops found the ration rice packed in gunny bags being ferried to Kerala.
The police confiscated two tonnes of polished PDS rice from the truck and 50 tonnes from the car.
The accused were identified as Jaffar Khan (30), Vivek (26) and Glittus (26), hailing from Kanyakumari district.
We are interrogating the smugglers to ascertain the whereabouts of PDS rice and those involved in the smuggling, Mr Swaminathan added.
It may be recalled that the cops seized four tones of PDS rice, while being smuggled to Kerala in a lorry at Chathirapatti check-post in this district on July six last.
