Thiruvananthapuram | The Kerala Government will recommend the State Election Commission to provide online voting right to Non Resident Keralites (NRKs) in the coming local body elections.
A decision in this regard was taken by the State Cabinet, State Non-Resident Affairs Minister K C Joseph has said.
Already necessary amendments have been made to the Panchayat Raj Act and the Municipal Act to provide voting right to non resident Malayalees becoming the first state in the country to provide political rights to NRIs, he said.
An all party meeting chaired by Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy was held a few days ago to discuss the matter. But it failed to reach a consensus on proxy vote proposal due to apprehension by the Opposition parties that the voting facility could be mismanaged for political gain.
However, the Centre, the EC and the SC were in favour of priding online voting right to expatriates.
