Suchindrum (Kannyakumari) | The work on the Colachel International Transshipment terminal will begin soon, Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari announced today.
Speaking at a function here to launch ten road development projects worth Rs 3,000 crore for Tamil Nadu, the Minister said the feasibility study on the project had already been completed. ”We are going to start the work on Colachel port as early as possible and it is going to be a boon to the economy of the state,” he added.
He said it was an important project for the overall development of Tamil Nadu as it would be a major port with a draft of 20 meters.
The Minister said he got assurance from Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan, who represent the constituency, that the state Chief Minister would extend full support to it.
Mr Gadkari said he had already discussed the details of the project, which have a huge potential for employment generation, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Mr Gadkari’s announcement assumes significance as the Kerala Government is going ahead with a similar Vizhinjam International Transhipment project in Thiruvananthapuram district. It had already awarded the project to Adani Group.
