Thiruvananthapuram | The Kerala government proposes to use plastic waste for construction of roads as pilot ”plastic roads” in the state are found to be effective and durable, Public Works Minister V K Ibrahim Kunj informed the state Assembly today.
In a written reply, the Minister said that a few selected roads were constructed in 2006 by using the bitumen-plastic mixture on an experimental basis. ”These roads are found to be in good health as compared to others constructed in a traditional manner. We propose to extend plastic roads to other districts and more areas.”
He said the shredded plastic waste would be mixed with tar for this purpose. He pointed out that the plastic roads undergo less distress thus corresponding to longer life.
