New Delhi | A written reply by Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh about farmers’ suicides today enraged Rajya Sabha Members, who objected to causes cited for the extreme steps being taken by agrarian community.
K C Tyagi of the JD(U) angrily reacted to the reply given in response to a starred question, which did not come up for supplementaries due to continuous ruckus in the House.
Quoting from the written reply provided by the Agriculture Minister, Mr Tyagi said, It says that farmers are committing suicides due to family problems, love affairs, barrenness/impotency.”
The written reply provided by the ministry stated that, According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), causes of suicides include family problems, illness, drug abuse/addiction, unemployment, property dispute, professional/career problems, love affairs, barrenness/impotency, cancellation/non-settlement of marriage, dowry dispute, fall in social reputation and unknown causes.
The Minister also noted, Causes of suicide by farmers due to agrarian reasons inter-alia, include indebtedness, crop failure, drought, socio-economic and personal.
Over 3,200 farmers committed suicides in the past three and half years, according to information provided in the reply.
