Kerala wants khadi workers under MNREGA

Kannur | Minister for Rural Development and Planning K C Joseph has said that the State Government has recommended to include Khadi  and Village Sector Employees under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGA).
For this purpose, the government has already taken up this issue with the Union Government and is waiting for a positive reply, he said while inaugurating the State- level Khadi Onam Fair at town square here today.
Minister Joseph informed this issue was a Central subject and the State Government alone cannot take a decision in this regard. However, the State Government has strongly demanded to include this sector under the MNREGA Scheme.
He said the Khadi Sector would do lot good for the society as it provides employment opportunities and functions to strengthen national integrity . The State Government will take all the steps to foster the development of Khadi industry.
Kerala Khadi and village Industries Board (KKVIB) Vice Chairman K P Noordudheen said the board has set a sales turn over of Rs 100 crore from the Onam Fair across the  State outlets and 30 per cent rebate and credit facility up to Rs 25,000 can be availed by Government employees,bank staff and PSUs during the onam fair, he said while delivering his presidential address.
District Panchayat President K A Sarala and District Collector P Balakiran also attended the function.
