Thiruvananthapuram | A colourful water pageantry comprising snake boats and country boats on the river Pampa will mark the opening of this year’s Aranmula Uthrittathi boat race, the oldest river-boat-fiesta in Kerala, on August 31.
Union Tourism Minister Mahesh Verma will inaugurate the boat race, organising secretary Radhakrishnan P R said in a release here today.
Mr Verma said, as many as 51 snake-boats will take part in the pageantry and race to be held in A and B batches. The winners of the pageantry would be presented with Mannam Trophy.
Thousands of people used to gather on the banks of the river Pampa every year, as snake-boats move in pairs to the rhythm of singing and shouting at queer pitch.
